Race, Rank and Community Involvement

THE ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL MOBILITY of blacks which has been widely recognized in recent years in national and regional changes is also being expressed at the community level. This paper is focused at the community level on emerging black leadership, and on the organizational and class context in which change is occurring. Although blacks have long had strong organizations in their primary community, chiefly the church and the fraternal order, it is only recently that they have become actively involved in the organized life of the larger community. Public attention has centered on the attainment by blacks of elective political office, but decided gains have also been made in participation in voluntary activities. There is a growing literature on politics, both popular and scholarlyl but little or none on community participation in a voluntary context. One intended contribution of this paper is to provide data on participation of this latter type
