In this study our aim was to construct an integrated sociological model that comprised the necessary components for explaining adjustment to role transitions during the retirement process. The significance of this model is that it demonstrated how the individual’s perception of any role transition as either constraining or enabling is dependent on three pre- and/or post-role transition factors: namely, definition of the situation, structural and personal resources. A further aim was to demonstrate that the model provided a frame of reference for the policy-makers and designers of preparation-for-retirement programmes which are intended to aid persons in their adjustments to later life. In the latter instance existing programmes are not achieving the full results they aim for mainly because they deal with retirement as a monolithic event, thereby ignoring continuity and diversity among aged persons. Since the current trend is to offer these programmes to selected groups only, there is an urgent need to change their current formats to meet the needs of all population groups regardless of gender, socio-economic status, educational level, and language
