In assuming the universality of anxiety experience, most anxiety scales have used the same set of situations or responses (translated where necessary into the vernacular) for widely differing cultural groups. The present study investigates how a group of South African Indians self-report such situational and response aspects of anxiety, and compares this with items in instruments developed for the West. Subjects were required to indicate the kinds of situations about which they typically become anxious, and their attendant modes of response. Results suggest that the situational categories (as put forward in the study), cover most anxiety-provoking situations relevant to the sample of South African Indians. Content analyses of anxiety responses, however, reveal the need to include a number of additional specific response modes, and that care be exercised in the linguistic expression of items
