In a previous article the author has indicated the problems involved in a phenomenological sociology which took it away from an interest in real subjects' meanings. A new phenomenological programme was formulated to achieve this end but at the sacrifice of sociology's focus on interaction and intersubjectivity. It is argued here chat ethnomethodology provides solutions to these problems and demonstrates how it is possible to combine in one programme a direct focus on subjects and remain firmly within the sociological tradition of analysis of interaction, social relationships and intersubjectivity. To this end, a review of ethnomethodology's character is provided as a preface to discussion of its advantages over phenomenological sociology
