ROAD SAFETY AS A SOCIAL PROBLEM: The behaviour of man which determines his relation to the environment is largely set by the system of norms and values which characterizes a certain society. This system influences the way the individual performs his role in society and, of course, also allocates the type of role to the individuals. A subsystem which has severe rules to be obeyed is the traffic system, to which the term “road safety” is connected. This system requires from the individual, i.e. the driver, a high potential for adaptation and quick reaction but as it is very difficult to cope with these requirements most of the drivers can be considered as “accident-prone”. The behaviour of the individual is under the constant influence of various stimuli which come from the environment and the psyche. The psyche is especially influenced by the innate character of the individual, physical stimuli. social stimuli, desired stimuli like drugs, the philosophy of life and other factors like age. Statistical data show that road accidents are in 77–80% of all cases caused by the human factor. In view of this, more sociological research in this field is necessary
