Relationship between occupation and attitude among a group of white workers in Pretoria. The aim of this research was to determine to what extent blue-collar, white-collar and professional workers in Pretoria differ from each other concerning five attitudinal aspects, namely, job motivation, job satisfaction, work relationships, attitudes towards the self, and the family. A sample was drawn from working people in Pretoria and both quantitative data (questionnaire) and qualitative data (interviews) were obtained. The results suggest that there were several differences in attitudes between the various occupational categories. The attitudes of blue-collar workers regarding four of the five attitudinal aspects were significantly more negative than those of professional workers. Attitudes of white-collar workers were significantly more positive than those of blue-collar workers with regard to four of the five attitudinal aspects. However, the attitudes of white-collar workers were less positive on two of the five attitudinal aspects than professional workers. It also appears that professional workers experienced high levels of job satisfaction and had strong positive attitudes towards themselves: In turn, blue-collar workers experienced low levels of work motivation and had negative attitudes towards their families and towards work relationships with their fellow workers and superiors
