ORGANISATIONAL CULTURE IN INDUSTRIAL SOCIOLOGY: Organisational culture is a new concept which has emerged during the past decade due to the increasing interest of social scientists in the human interaction process within the industrial context. This concept refers to the unique social environment which is characteristic of a particular organisation. Organisational culture originates from the patterned orderliness in the interaction among members of the organisation. The most outstanding characteristics of organisational culture can be summarised as follows: Every organisation tends to possess an individuality of its own that distinguishes it from other organisations; this is the result of the interaction among the members of the organisation on the one hand, and the external environmental factors on the ether hand; the uniqueness of organisation causes the behaviour of both employees and management to be influenced differently. On longterm, organisational culture presents a valid basis for the prediction of organisational success. With regard to training, it is apparent from the syllabi for Sociology and Industrial Sociology at South African universities that not a single syllabus deals with the theme of organisational culture. Very limited, if any, basic research on organisational culture has been carried out up to date. The challenges in this relatively unfamiliar and unexplored area of organisational culture are countless, as well as complex. By mean of specialised training and research in this field, aimed at conditions in South Africa, Industrial Sociology could undoubtedly render sociology and South African industry a service
