The concept natiomlism is sociologically important in so far as it is one of the legion of concepts by which men are classified. In an exposition of the concept nationalism it is also important to indicate what is meant by the concepts race, people, nation and state. The sociologist views race as a bia-social concept; people as a socio-cultural concept; nation as a socia-political concept and a state as a group of persons within a definite territory in their social positions as members of a sovereign government, or as citizens or subjects. Nationalism puts the emphasis upon the realities and bonds of nationality. It indicates any principle which recognizes the nation as the basis for group action. In the Republic of South Africa we find different racial groups, with the Whites and the Bantu as the two dominant groups. Each of these racial groups is subdivided into different peoples, ethnic groups or cultural communities. In South Africa, therefore, we have a South African nation, which consists of different cultural groups or peoples - with the Afrikaans-speaking people as the dominant component amongst the Whites
