CONGRESS OF THE S.A. SOCIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION, 22 JANUARY 1975, PRETORIA UNIVERSITY — OPENING ADDRESS BY DR. J.P. ROUX, DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH: In June 1974 the Minister of Health announced that the South African Government has accepted a Ntaional Family Planning Programme. The aim of this programme is to effect improvement in the health of the population, especially of the mother and child; to give every couple the opportunity of deciding on their own fertility; to improve the socio-economic position of the family and consequently that of the population as a whole. An extensive clinic service has already been established throughout the country which caters for the increasing natural demand for family planning. The Department of Health has established a section for family planning motivation which will organise an intensive family planning educational campaign. A team of family planning educators will undertake personal motivation, while mass media will also be used to advertise these services. Continuous research regarding social and medical aspects of family planning is of the utmost importance in providing the best possible family planning service to the population. An appeal is made to Sociologists at research institutes and universities to assist this Department in its endeavours to promote family planning
