Self-esteem seems to be emerging within South Africa today as one of the key social indicators in current analyses of social change, growth and progress. Yet knowledge regarding this construct is limited. In this study the author investigated a variety of instruments intended to measure the level of self-esteem and defensiveness amongst black university students. The purpose of the study was inter alia to define the self-esteem construct and to present an overview of research findings on black self-esteem in South Africa. The author's research findings with regard to the level of self-esteem among a sample of black South African students, and the extent to which this construct was related to defensiveness, are also presented
