ty-five members of mainstream Protestant denominations, who were clearly identified by means of the Religious Orientation Scale as holding intrinsically motivated religious beliefs, were found to hold a significantly more healthy attitude towards their own deaths, as assessed by the Death Attitude Scale, than did an equivalent sample of extrinsically motivated individuals. It is thus suggested that religious believers who are intrinsically motivated in their religious orientation are more able to confront the facticity of their own deaths than are extrinsically motivated religious believers. Attention is called to the finding that these two fundamentally different religious orientations do not necessarily bear an equivalent relationship to the attitude towards one's own death. S. Afr.
