The role of the extended family in modernization. This article defines modernization in terms of change and improvement. The latter includes a heightening of the degree of functioning efficiency which is seen in terms of an improved level of actualization andlor utilization of the potential of the means available to a social system. This is manifested on a social level in an increased degree of structural differentiation and a real or imagined improvement in the level of existence
