This paper attempts to point out what are deemed to be pertinent inherent exigencies in social research; exigencies which a sociological investigator engaging in a research project might find useful to note. These include the problems of objectivity; ideology; causal connections; limitations of observable categories; the reification of human consciousness; and others including limitations of time and place, the gap between human attitudes and behaviour and problems of entry info the research setting. It is sincerely hoped that this paper, through a systematic presentation of these basic problems in a singular format, will be of assistance to social investigators embarking upon research projects. Further, three concepts — triangulation, inference and “panelling” — will be dealt with as possible tools for coping with these exigencies at least to some extent
