The advent of Women's Studies within the academic world has been rejected by some feminists who consider it an impossible venture and an attempt to co-opt feminism. It has been defended by those feminists who see it as providing support for feminists as well as an alternative space from which to criticize the rest of the academy. Other feminists have abandoned the idea of a separate Women's Studies and argue that each discipline should take up the issues that are currently discussed in Women's Studies. Significantly, Women's Studies has not been regarded as simply another field of study. In this article the author outlines some of the issues that have been raised by feminists about formal Women's Studies courses
