The importance of spectacular subcultures here is not that they represent the whole of ‘youth’ in some homogenous ‘youth culture’ but, in their practices of ‘winning space’ within and against the hegemonic order, they constitute fragile, transient and minority forms, issuing symbolic challenges to the dominant culture and its definitions. 1
