OF THE MAJOR CAUSES of death in the United States, suicide is the only one for which the rates are incontestably lower for blacks than for whites. Herein lies one of the great puzzles for psychiatrists, epidemiologists, and social scientists. If ever there were a group for whom all of the usual concomitants of high suicide rates were present, it would surely be American blacks. On the whole, American society constantly frustrates American blacks, and the rewards given their labor remain nigardly. Even worse, blacks are effectively prevented from acquiring the skills which are necessary in a technologically oriented society, and therefore are unable to compete on equal terms. Only a minority of black children live until adulthood in families where both parents are present, and a high proportion are illegitimate or dependent upon welfare
