Louis Compton Miall was a scientist of note, initially in geology and later as an entomologist. As a Fellow of the Royal Society he knew scientific giants like Thomas Huxley and had the unusual distinction of being, within a few years, president of the British Association sections in both zoology and educational science. He wrote well and his contributions in geology, zoology, scientific history and education were lucid and authoritative. He was at all times an enthusiastic naturalist, and the countryside of Yorkshire was the inspiration for much of his work
