An American medical epidemiologist who worked in the People's\nRepublic of China for several years recounts a case history illustrative of\nthe Chinese approach to medical ethics, which is influenced by common values\nand a scarcity of medical resources. Chinese society is relatively\nhomogeneous, with a corresponding congruity of values emphasizing harmony, the\ncommon good, and the suppression of conflict. Informed consent, disclosure of\nphysician error, malpractice and peer criticism are unknown. The author\nsuggests that the current modernization policy may change the health care\nsystem and create Western-style ethical dilemmas. (KIE abstract)
