Social structure and non-formal educational needs of urban communities

An important social change in recent decades has been the rapid urbanization of South African society. This in turn affects educational concepts, forcing an increasing number of adults to seek new knowledge and skills made available through non-formal education (NFE). NFE supports and complements the formal education system. It is seen as a catalyst for educational and socio-economic change and a strategy to combat poverty, ignorance and inequality. A metropolitan Indian suburb was selected to study the social structure and NFE needs of its adult residents. The study revealed that most of those interviewed were literate, not engaged in further studies and in white-collar jobs. Housewives comprised a large percentage of those not employed. Respondents indicated a clear preference for NFE courses provided they were of their choice and offered in their district once or twice per week on weekdays.
