I n 1941, and again in 1948, Dr. Rose carried out field work among the aborigines of Groote Eylandt, off the north coast of Australia.The working out and interpreting of the field data went on intermittently for several years afterwards.Only since joining the Hutnboldt University in East Berlin did he have the occasion for the final writing up of his analysis.The result, the book now under review, seems to me not only so remarkable, but also so important in many respects that a full-length article is required to do justice to it.In this article then I shall first attempt to summarize the contents, then to give a critical commentary (beginning with some minor points, and af ter that passing on to questions of principle), and finally to indicate some of its implications for the study of kinship systems, particularly those of Australia
