I ;HROUGHOUT the istory of New France, it was ontinually true that, in accordance with the precepts of mereantilism, the trade of the colony exist d largely for the ben fit of the mother country. Canadian forests, farms, and fisheries helped to provide France with the raw materials which she needed, and, in turn, did something to absorb the industrial products with which the home market was flooded. Yet, as the surplus products of the colony increased, as the financial capital and number of ships available to the Quebec merchants grew greater, as the harbour facilities of Quebec were improved, it was also true that Canadian traders became more and more interested in developing commercial relations between New France .and the other French colonies in
