Although not all progressive planners are completely certain of the wisdom of such excision,' the concensus of opinion seems to be, that while the study of a foreign language may contribute positive values, it does so only at the cost of a considerable expenditure of time, an expenditure that is impractical in the educational economy of the average student. As a result, we find the substitution of a three to six credit course in General (or World) Literature, the claim being that the student will acquire more developmental value from such a course than he can get from two or three years of foreign language study. Whatever the merits of the case, the fact remains that translation courses are mushrooming at the expense of foreign language courses, and that many foreign language teachers will eventually find themselves asssigned to cover such courses
