The lexical reservoir of a language has been described metaphorically as a mirror of national culture. Schiller's words, die Sprache ist der Spiegel einer Nation,1 are notably borne out in two wellknown German works dedicated to this point of view: Oskar Weise's Die deutsche Sprache als Spiegel deutscher Kultur (Jena, 1923), and Friedrich Seiler's Entwicklung der deutschen Kultur im Spiegel des Lehnworts (Halle, 1913-24). These classical treatises and the more recent Deutsche Wortgeschichte (by Fr. Mauer and Fr. Stroh, Berlin, 1959) clearly emphasize the importance of linguistic borrowing in the history of a cultural phylum
