A bird's-eye view of Hermann Hesse's prose reveals three distinct periods, each of which represents a different stage in the course of the author's struggle with himself and with life, and which reflects a correspondingly different phase in the mood of his creative activity and in the nature of his art. From this vantage point of distance and major trends rather than from the minutiae of individual works, one most readily perceives the continuity, the development and the gradual heightening of Hesse's prose in both its substance and its art
