Lexical and grammatical uses of the same word have asymmetric processing costs. This article presents a study on the word way , which has recently increased in frequency as a grammaticalized intensifier. In a priming experiment presented in this study we observed a significant slowdown of grammatical way when it was preceded by lexical way , confirming previous findings. We attribute this slowdown to the cost of switching from declarative to procedural processing with different neurological pathways. The study included 30 bilingual subjects tested on 88 distinct recorded sentences and 18 sentences to be detected as nonsensical. The results indicate asymmetric costs of processing when a lexical usage was preceded by a grammatical usage of the word way . We also confirmed collocation patterns which indicate that language users avoid switching between lexical and grammatical forms
