On December 15, 1980 Alvin Gouldner died in Madrid after completing a lecture tour in Europe. In recent years he had found Europe more congenial to his style and it is fitting he should have died there. The American sociological establishment had tended to ignore his critique of sociology and his efforts to construct theoretical alternatives. It came as no surprise that at the memorial service held in St. Louis December 28, not one member of the sociology department or administration of Washington University, where Gouldner had taught for 23 years, was in attendance. Al was a giant of a man — physically, personally, intellectually
