A brief summary is provided of a paper on the social implications of progress in the development of preconception methods of sex selection. The paper, "Influence of sex pre-selection on global populations," by B.C. Bhattacharya, E.F. Greenwald, and C.F. Westoff, appears in a recent report from the United Nations Fund for Population Activities, Human Fertility, Health and Food. Its authors predict that sex preselection techniques may be used within a decade in the effort to limit population growth, and they urge that attention be directed to assuring that the new technology is used to benefit individuals and society
