With his passing the profession lost a scholar whose field and laboratory research contributed to our understanding of the prehistory and early history of several geographic regions; a teacher whose breadth of knowledge stimulated and encouraged several generations of undergraduate and graduate students; and a curator whose devotion to professional standards led to the establishment of one of the few new museums of anthropology
