The 1982 Malvinas War not only pitted Argentina against the United Kingdom but also reshaped regional dynamics in the Southern Cone. This article offers a comparative analysis of Peru and Chile, two neighboring countries that adopted diametrically opposed positions. While Fernando Belaúnde Terry’s democratic government in Peru provided both diplomatic and military support to Argentina in the name of Latin American solidarity, Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship in Chile secretly collaborated with the United Kingdom, prioritizing national security and alignment with the West. Using the process tracing methodology, the study reconstructs the causal mechanisms behind these divergent decisions, drawing on academic works, journalistic investigations, and testimonial sources. Findings indicate that Peruvian policy was strongly influenced by a tradition of Latin Americanism and by long-standing rivalry with Chile, while Chilean policy stemmed from the Beagle Channel crisis and the regime’s quest for international legitimacy. The contrast highlights how the Malvinas War acted as a catalyst for both solidarity and rivalry in South America, revealing the persistent tension between regional integration and fragmentation in Latin America’s international relations
