Since the return to democratic rule in 1999, policy implementation in higher education has become a terrain of contention between the political elite and bureaucrats, stalling the implementation of seemingly well-intentioned policies for the advancement of higher education in Ondo State. Previous studies have largely overlooked the political context of policy implementation in the State’s higher education subsector. To appreciate the problems bedevilling tertiary institutions in the State, they must be examined from the political dimension of the policy process. Using a survey method, this study examined the relationship between politics and the implementation of staff recruitment and funding policies in tertiary institutions in Ondo State, with Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPO) as a case study. It investigated the politics associated with the implementation of these policies and the effects of political interference. The findings revealed a significant relationship between politics and policy implementation in RUGIPO. The study concluded that political interference was a key factor undermining implementation success. It is recommended that government and institutional leadership establish transparent, merit-based recruitment processes and adopt depoliticised funding frameworks to improve policy outcomes and reinforce institutional autonomy
