During the years 1939–1945, W. H. Auden employed Jung's typology as a theoretical framework for his inquiry into the multi-vocal nature of poetic truth and the silencing of dialectic during wartime. This article criticizes Jungian interpretations that sacrifice a work of art to Jungian theorizing and demonstrates how to position a reading of Jung's Psychological Types in service of understanding Auden's The Age of Anxiety. In this light, Auden presented anxiety within a religious context as a fundamental aspect of individuation. The article evaluates Auden's compensatory attempt to position anxiety in his cosmology as a primary concern
