The paper was inspired by the author’s near-disastrous Alaskan wilderness experience, which evoked a series of reflections concerning the nature of the grizzly bear and humanity’s relationship to the bear. The ubiquitous images of aggressive bears on display in Alaska led to questions about the psychological and cultural connections between humans and bears, humans and nature, mortality and the infinite. The essay builds on Joseph Henderson’s study of the bear in relation to initiation, which comprises the appendix to Thresholds of Initiation
