In his philosophy of the libido, first presented in Wandlungen und Symbole der Libido, or Symbols of Transformation [of Libido] (Jung 1911-12/1952), Jung claimed that saying “all differentiated achievement as a substitute for some form of sexuality” avoids the real task, namely, to acknowledge psychic reality. He claimed even so-called primitives know the danger of this “deviation” into the sexual. The author explores Jung’s The Red Book painting of Prajapati bowing before Agni in this context. The implications for analytical psychology are discussed. While problems caused by blocked or split-off libido are part of treatment, the larger task is taking on the demands of developed awareness of psychic reality
