Joseph Cambray's book on synchronicity, Synchronicity: Nature & Psyche in an Interconnected Universe, gives a detailed, excellent review of Jung's definition and theory of this concept. The book provides many historical insights that demonstrate how Jung's thinking evolved and how it relates to the fields of physics, chemistry, and psychology as well as medieval alchemy. Cambray shows readers the philosophical and scientific contexts in which Jung studied this idea. Jung first defined synchronicity in 1929 in terms of things coinciding temporally, which accents their meanings. After lecturing on this topic in 1951, he subsequently published his main paper on synchronicity in German and English. Synchronicity encompasses meaningful coincidence, acausal connection, and a numinous quality. The author highly recommends Cambray's book for its timeliness, discussion of field theory and complexity, and its exciting perspective on our clinical work
