This article analyses the artistic and visual depiction of the tragic events of The Tale of Igor’s Campaign, a twelfth-century Russian literary text. It focuses on the graphics of Leonid Shvartsman (1920–2022), an artist whose work is widely recognised for his exceptional cartoons. Shvartsman is not as well represented as an artist who embodied the images of classic Russian literature from various eras in his works. The drawings and sketches he created as a graduation project while studying at the Art Department of the Institute of Cinematography (VGIK, Moscow) for the work of Old Russian Literature in 1951 have never been exhibited or published in full. The author of the article addresses this issue by examining the mid-twentieth century period and offering a nuanced, insightful interpretation of the work’s visual imagery through a philosophical lens. Out of more than 30 works, eight have been selected for consideration. These works also reveal new aspects of Russian culture and demonstrate the results of the artist’s extensive research. The artist endured a difficult period of war and maintained his belief in the ability to overcome challenges and find purpose in the values of mercy and unity among people, guided by love for his fatherland and a strong faith
