Around 900 AD, John the Deacon of Naples’ hagiographical works include numerous personaldetails, even autobiographical ones. This article focuses precisely on these passages, especially on three very detailed prefaces, to point out what the authors shhows of his work and of himself. John has his very own ways of resolving the contradictions between the topoi proper to the genre and the author’s freedom, between the mandatoryhumility ant the lettered man’s consciousness and pride. Resorting to St Jerome’s endorsement, in particular, enables him to appear unyieldingly self-confident while stepping back behind an unsurpassable model
