This paper was delivered as the 2024 Maurice Bond Lecture. It explores the place of the Victoria County History in the landscape of English archives over the last 125 years. It examines the ways in which historians working for the project have helped establish and interact with the archives they use and the ways in which changing archival landscapes have influenced its work. The Victoria County History (strictly, the Victoria History of the Counties of England), better known as the VCH, is the longest-lived and most ambitious local history project yet devised. Founded in 1899, the project uses primary, archival sources to produce histories of place from the earliest point of record to the ever-moving now. Today it is active in over 20 counties and two of the historic Ridings of Yorkshire. It has published 250 of its ‘Big Red Books’ and in the last decade and a half around 40 shorter histories of individual places and areas in England, the work of professional and volunteer historians
