The physical condition, size and complexity of the records of the Court of Arches has long posed difficulties for researchers wishing to exploit this rich resource. The task has now been made much easier by a long-term programme of conservation alongside an ongoing cataloguing project which is making detailed descriptions available for the first time. This case study uses the records of the court to provide a vivid account of the life of the Restoration actor John Lacy. The records disclose intriguing details about his private life as well as revealing just how he managed to survive the closure of the theatres during the Interregnum
