This article explores the story of the national, regional and sectoral surveys of the historical records of business undertaken in the UK since the 1930s. It describes how the surveying of business archives began in 1934 with the foundation of the Business Archives Council and how the council’s work was augmented in the post-war decades by research projects led by university-based economic historians. The article shows how business archive surveying work began to be driven forward by archivists themselves from the late 1970s and that a best-practice approach to publishing the findings of such surveys gradually emerged, led largely by the work of the Business Archives Council. In concluding, the article demonstrates the uniqueness, value and legacy of the UK’s long tradition of business archive surveying
