Better known for his analyses of the “Russian problem” than the “Jewish question”, the liberal Christian Anatole Leroy-Beaulieu (1842-1912) was nonetheless the author of landmark studies on anti-Semitism, which he considered to be “right-wing socialism”. From 1891 to 1893, he dismantled the arguments of anti-Semites in articles for the Revue des Deux Mondes, culminating in the essay Israël chez les Nations. Les juifs et l’antisémitisme (Calmann-Lévy, 1893). During the Dreyfus Affair, he accompanied his publications (L’Antisémitisme, 1897; les immigrants juifs et le judaïsme aux États-Unis, 1905) with speeches at several para-university institutions, including the École des hautes études sociales founded by Dick May, herself the daughter of a rabbi. It was here that he gave his famous lecture on “the doctrines of hatred”, which was reprinted in 1902 by Calmann-Lévy. We study A. Leroy-Beaulieu’s fight against anti-Semitism by placing this complex individual (a democratic academic, reformist but anti-socialist, patriot and pacifist) in the networks in which he participated – from Leplaysian circles to the Universités populaires, via Jewish circles
