As the last queen of France under the ancien régime, Marie Antoinette experienced a drastic transformation of her image before and after the Revolution. In the early days of the eruption of the Revolution, she was portrayed as a wicked queen who brought misfortune upon the country and the people. However, in the nineteenth century, her image changed significantly, shifting from the beheaded queen of the Revolutionary period to a suffering martyr. This transformation profoundly encompasses the evolution of politics and culture during the Revolution, and demonstrates the efforts in nineteenth-century French society to seek the unification of history and social integration after experiencing the fracturing of history. The Queen was transformed from an extravagant sinner into a symbol of steadfast faith and innocent martyrdom. This transformation of her image was predicated upon French society’s collective healing from the wounds of the Revolution, while also reflecting the reinterpretation of the concept of sacrifice in the nineteenth century, whereby sacrifice was regarded as a key force in historical progress and social reconstruction. Marie Antoinette became not only a tragic figure in the memory of the French Revolution, but also a historical symbol—a martyred queen who transcended political struggles and bore the weight of the emotions of the era and historical culture
