Based on the information provided by Cicero in the Verrines, this paper explores the evolution in public perception of some of the inscriptions that accompanied the works of art procured as war booty, displayed in various cities in Italy, Sicily, and Spain, from their initial function as vehicles for aristocratic Roman propaganda in the second century CE, to their transformation into key elements in the construction of collective memory in the communities that hosted them
