In 1916-1917, Carry van Bruggen (1881-1932) contributed stories, articles of current interest, literary criticism and essays in the domain of literary and cultural history to De Amsterdamsche Dameskroniek. She developed a socio-historical approach based on the idea that literary works reflect the “spirit” of their time, foreshadowing Prometheus (1919), her grand treatise on the “development of individualism in literature”. Literary history and criticism contribute to a reflection on the position of women in western society and their role in the “process of liberation” of the individual
