The article deals with the articulation between the conceptions of the Enlightenment about laughter and its role in the novel. Drawing on both the tradition of farce and wit, Wieland makes laughter a sign of the interdependence of mind and body and the cardinal point of his break with a dichotomous vision of the Enlightenment based upon the opposition between reason and sensibility, truth and fiction. Ultimately, Wieland emphasises the therapeutic function of laughter and’good humor’ in society, as these factors alleviate the pathological affects which caused the main character’s suffering
