The Norse settlements in Greenland were founded by people of Icelandic origin shortly before the year 1000. Little is known about the history of these settlements, which lasted for almost half a millennium, apart from the considerable number of archaeological findings and the accounts in numerous texts written in Iceland during the Middle Ages. This article shines a light on some Old Norse texts that narrate the circumstances of the settlement of Greenland and events related to it. This leads us to study the place and role of Greenland in the Icelandic imagination during the Middle Ages, based on the hypothesis that Greenland, as Iceland’s close neighbour, was a kind of mirror through which the saga poets explored certain unspoken aspects of their psychic and social life
