Felix Mitterer’s play Jägerstätter (2013) deals, in 31 scenes, with the destiny of the Austrian catholic farmer Franz Jägerstätter, who was executed in 1943 because of conscientious objection. This paper analyzes Mitterer’s adaptation of this historical figure. The play tries to get closer to this exceptional man while reflecting his life and convictions through Jägerstätter’s letters and commentaries. But it doesn’t limit itself to this unique character. In the play, Jägerstätter’s wife, Franziska, has a leading role, which will be examined in the second part of this paper. In the third part, the numerous allusions to the historical context, which widens the message of the play, will be revealed. The fourth part interprets the character Jägerstätter in Mitterer’s play as a timeless symbol of humanity
