This article examines Wieland’s Don Sylvio von Rosalva as an experimental contribution to the emergence of a modern Romantic poetics. The novel’s heterogeneous material reflects Wieland’s familiarity with the European narrative forms of the modern era, which he revisits with virtuosity and combines in an ironic and playful manner. Behind the parodic and comic aspects of the plot, however, rudiments of a conception and practice of the novel can be discerned, in which it is appreciated as a modern form of Socratic dialogue. The fiction is simultaneously rehabilitated and deconstructed as illusion
