This Commentary on Mark Richard’s Meaning as Species raises three sets of questions about Richard’s project: first about the relation between his conception of meaning and the determination of reference and propositional content; second, about its relation to Paul Grice’s notion of speaker meaning, and more generally to the Gricean program for a theory of conversation, and third about way meanings evolve while maintaining their identity
