The subject of the article is the emotional relationship between Władysław S. Reymont and Wanda Toczyłowska, whom the writer met in 1906 in Zakopane. This relationship continued through an exchange of letters for several years, until 1912. Their correspondence is the basic, although not the only source of knowledge about this acquaintance. The article discusses the efforts of the addressee to sell Reymont’s letters in the 1930s, which became the starting point for the reconstruction of Toczyłowska’s biography, previously presented by Reymontologists in a very imperfect form. The article contains hypotheses regarding the influence of this woman on Reymont’s work, especially on the novel 'The Vampire', and presents the writer’s internal emotional state revealed in the letters, which indicates his disappointment with married life and his search for new experiences. The text also challenges some earlier interpretations of this relationship and its literary exemplifications
