Focusing on Old Believers in Latvia, this article examines the problem of integrating the educational traditions of a religious minority into the national education system. State support for religious activities during the 1920s and 1930s made it possible to implement a training program at schools and to use non-formal education by public organizations. Nowadays religious education among Latvian Old Believers has become completely dependent on the initiatives of the community and is not an integral part of school education. Public and private (family) education has been crucial in the survival of the Old Believer community and development of its identity
